Monkey Sandwich in Venice

Monkey Sandwich is the closing film of the Orrizonti section at Venice Film Festival.

” Jerry is the director of a theatre group. He works obsessively and fanatically, but is frustrated. He decides to turn his back on his artificial theatre activities and establishes a village, but whereas in the fantasy world of the theatre he was able to command his actors’ respect and control them, he fails to do so in real life.
Ambitious Jerry leads the community of the village, which is surrounded by water. He has undertaken a controversial project to change the natural course of the surrounding river. He believes that he can make life in the community better, but is finding it difficult to convince others of his ideals.
Jerry can no longer find harmony in his family life.  His pregnant wife Carly is disappointed in him and blames him for being obsessed with his river project. One night, after a traditional public meeting, Davis takes him to his house on a hill. At that moment the river bursts its banks and floods the valley. Everyone dies in the disaster, including Carly and her unborn child.
Jerry’s reality falters in dreams and hallucinations. He has visions of his deceased villagers. He sees his unborn child in several guises: baby, toddler and teenager. Eventually, right before he dies, he recognises his son as an old man. ”
